Koh Chang is third largest island in Thailand after Phuket and Samui. Koh Chang is located in Trat Province and it’s the most popular of the islands in eastern Thailand.
There’re many islands in Thailand, all of them beautiful. I decided to go to Koh Chang because I needed somewhere to relax and chilled out and easy to travel from Bangkok. And here is things you should know before visiting Koh Chang !
Koh Chang Travel Guide
How to get there
If you want to start traveling from Bangkok and you’re a little bit more on the budget of traveling as I am, I‘d recommend to take a bus from either Ekamai-eastern bus terminal or Morchit-northern bus terminal. All buses will leave more or less every hour. You don’t need to buy tickets in advance -you can just buy them at the bus station. The bus takes about 5-6 hours to Trat’s bus terminal. And after that you have to take a local taxi to the Koh Chang ferry.
Note: All buses will leave more or less every hour. As long as it’s not a Thai National holiday becasue a lot of local people go to their hometowns from Bangkok.
The best time to visit
The best season to visit Koh chang is the cool season start from November to February. During this period, you will have sunshine and calm seas with good visibility for diving and snorkeling. Between March and April the sea is still calm and the sky is cloudless but it’s too hot for sunbathing on the beach.
On Koh Chang, There’re taxis run between all the beaches. But take a taxis are not really good a option because it’s quite expensive but If you have many people you can share taxis at a lower price. Alternatively, you can rent a motorbike or cars from the rental shops (150-200Bhat/day) and from the resorts around the island. (200-300Bhat/day)
Note: If you are inexperienced motorbike rider, you should think carefully before ranting a motorbike because the road is quite dangerous and there’re some dangerous hill sections.
Besides from relaxing at the beautiful beaches of Koh Chang. There’re many activities you can do. So I will recommend some interesting activities to give you an idea on what else there is to do. Here we go!!
There’re many companies that will offer half day and full day speedboat trips that go another island around for snorkeling or sightseeing. The speedboat will take you to Koh Wai, Koh Mak and Koh Kham.
You can adventure with elephants by riding in a chair on the elephant’s back over a short trek through the jungle and also you will see how much the elephants enjoy swimming in the local river but if you’re not interested in riding an elephant, you can just buy bananas and feed them.
Visit the Waterfalls
Koh Chang has many amazing waterfalls. The popular one is Klong Plu, It’s a big waterfall located on Klong Prao Beach. It’s a great place to cool off and easily accessible.
Note: This waterfall managed by the National Park so you have to pay an entrance fee to go in, 200 Baht for adults and 100 Baht for kids
And you’ll see plenty of fish !!
Trekking is another great things to do on the island. There’re a lot of nature and wild animals to discover. If you are interested in, I would recommend you to hire a guide from an office tour to show you around. You shouldn't go trekking on your own because you’ll probably get lost in the jungles.
White Sand beach is a long and most popular beach in Koh Chang. It’s a beautiful beach with white sand. Here you’ll find a lot of restaurants, bars and shops
Klong prao beach is the longest beach on the island. Here you'll find accommodation mostly in larger resorts. But you can still find some cheap bungalows. Night life here is very low. So If you want to come for a night life, I would say it’s not a good one.
Kai Bae beach is a nice beach with beautiful views. It’s clean and white sand. Here you’ll find a palm trees along the beach.
Lonely beach it’s a popular backpackers destination and fantastic place to relax. I enjoyed swimming and sunbathing on the beach and watching the sunset. It was the best past of my day. I guarantee that Lonely beach is worth a visit.
Where to stay
I chose to stay at Lonely Beach. As we know, It’s a heaven of backpackers and the party centre of the island. There’re a lot of hostels and bungalows with a good and cheap. Also a lot of bars at night, you can get a cheap drinks and enjoy live music.
So I decided to stay at Green sun bungalow, A really nice one accommodation to stay. The rooms are comfortable and convenient. And there’s balcony in front with a chair for chilling. Moreover, the bungalow is about 5 minutes by walk from Lonely beach and you can find a shop, restaurants and pharmacy easily.
If you are interested in this bungalow, Check more information and prices Here
So If you’re on a budget and looking for a Thai island with a friendly and chilled out. I’m sure Koh Chang is worth a visit.
